The fatgeorge Users Online module (fguol) takes the latest version of the core UOL module (4.9.4 & 5.1) and extends it to allow you to customise and integrate it more with your site.
The new features include:
Themes
You can now easily create your own look and feel for the UOL display, simply create a new theme folder, replace the images and even modify the .ascx file to create your own theme to match the look and feel of your site.
The fguol module comes with two themes:
- _default – the standard UOL look and feel.
- Horizontal – just an example to show how easy it is to modify the .ascx file.
Active Social Integration
If you have the Active Modules’ Active Social module installed on your portal you will find some extra configuration options enabled.
Selecting the User Prefix of ‘Active Social’ will enable AS messaging and AS profile links on the People Online Now display.
Selecting the ‘Show Friends Online’ option will display which of your Active Social friends
are currently online and again display them with the AS messaging and profile links.
IE8 Web Slice Enabled
“Using Web Slices, you can keep up with frequently updated sites directly from the new Favorites Bar. If a Web Slice is available on a page, a green Web Slices icon will appear in the Command Bar. Click on this icon to easily subscribe and add the Web Slices to the Favorites Bar so you can keep track of that "slice" of the web.
When new information becomes available, the Web Slice will become highlighted. When you click on the Web Slice in the Favorites Bar, it previews relevant information. Clicking on the preview takes you directly to the site for more information.”

FGUOL allows you to configure the module to be web sliced enabled.
Set the web slice title and optionally select which count you want to display in the title; either total membership or online now count.

When your fguol module is viewed in IE8 the web slice will be highlighted, clicking the slice handle will open the web slice dialogue box.

Once the web slice is added to your IE8 favorites bar you will be able to keep an eye on the membership of your site.
The minimum refresh rate for an IE8 web slice is 15 minutes, the fguol module sets this as the refresh rate automatically.
The web slice has an extra bonus side effect, because it is polling your site every 15 mins. it is effectively acting has a Keep-Alive service for free.
